EU joins Istanbul Convention
The European Union has joined the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women.
Věra Jourová signed the convention on behalf of the European Union.
Věra Jourová is EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality.
The Istanbul Convention focuses on the prevention of violence.
The Istanbul Convention also deals with the protection of victims
and with “ending the impunity of perpetrators“.
A convention is a contract between number of countries.
It says what the countries will do to protect the rights of their citizens.
Inclusion Europe welcomes the EU joining the Istanbul Convention.
It is an important step towards ending violence against women.
Up to 68% of girls with intellectual or developmental disabilities will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
Women with intellectual disabilities often suffer double discrimination – as people with disabilities and as women.
The experiences and needs of girls and women with intellectual disabilities deserve particular attention.
Inclusion Europe has a project called “Life after violence.”
This project examines how women with intellectual disabilities cope with institutionalised violence.
The research will analyse the causes and consequences of violence against women in institutions.
The project gives a voice to the women affected by violence.
The research will also give recommendations on how to help women with intellectual disabilities who have suffered from violence in institutions.
